Linotype Linotype
Linotype Typesetter

Linotype Model 8 (1939), Serial Number 53644, with complete installation of metal, magazines and mats. Sold as operational set only. Completely operational - requires EXPERIENCED operator, if you have never touched a Linotype before - don't even think about it! Electric pot, automatic saw, no quadder. Show up with $1000.00, a lot of muscle and a very large flatbed - you move it.

We get a lot of inquiries about this machine but: Moving a Linotype is not a task for the faint of heart! The unit probably weighs in between 1 to 2 tons and is 8' x 10' x 10'. We cannot predict the cost of shipping this unit. The unit is in its operational position in the typesetting room and crews moving it would have to partially disassemble the machine as well as partially disassemble several doorways to get the machine out the the building. This would be at the buyer's cost. While the machine was last run in 1998 and is in running condition with all parts, etc. it would still take a REAL Linotype mechanic to put it back into service. (Belt adjustments and lubrication, etc. of the over 10,000 moving parts. We are not kidding on the number of moving parts.) The Linotype has the distinction of being the absolutely least user-friendly machine in existence; so if you are an experienced operator/mechanic, you just might get it going. If you have never used a machine before and have no one with a LOT of experience to draw on, I guarantee it will be a very static display model for you. There are a lot of reasons this machine was replaced by computers that could be used to set type using relatively unskilled people! If this diatribe haven't been discouraging enough for you - please call us at the numbers below and we will give you further details.
