Mission and Vision Statement
We are the people of God called to
live our faith commitment in the Holy Angels Parish of the Diocese of San Angelo. We
affirm our belief in Jesus Christ. We commit ourselves to carry out His mission
to make the love of the Father known and accepted in our area of the
Diocese. We place ourselves under the patronage of our Mother Mary and
under the protection of the Angels.
There are many ways in which we attempt to fulfill
our task. We are especially conscious of listening to the voices of God's
people, especially those most in need of His love, to determine the
precise needs of the time. We recognize that these voices, joined with
our bishop and our parish priest is in a very special way the call of the
spirit.
Brief History of Holy Angels Parish
Ground
was broken for the "Holy
Angels School
and Parish" at the end of January 1960 and staffed by the Franciscan
Fathers. The buildings were sufficiently constructed to open their doors
for the first students to attend the new school in the fall of 1960. The
school's gymnasium was decorated to serve as a church and soon Fr. Simeon
Cleves, OFM, celebrated Sunday Masses there. Holy Angels was given the
status of a 'mission' of Sacred Heart Parish.
By the
following year, the mission had grown sufficiently to be designated a
parish with a resident priest, and it was named to that status by the
Bishop of Amarillo
on August 1, 1961. Fr. Cleves served as priest-in-charge. A few months
later, Holy Angels became a part of the newly established Diocese of San Angelo.
By the late
1970's, the second phase in the development of the parish took place--the
construction of a permanent church for the congregation. Ground was
broken in November of 1981 and the new church was completed in August of
1982 with the church being dedicated on August 15, 1982.
In June of
1996, Holy Angels completed a major renovation of the Parish Hall,
construction of what is now the Adult Faith
Center, and the
addition of two parking lots adjacent to the school complex.
On
February 8, 2002, ground was broken for a new 1,000 seat church. As part of a 2-phase project the 1982
church was transformed into the Education
Building and a 2,800 sq ft Recreation Center was added to the facility. The new church was dedicated on August
10, 2003.
Throughout its
history, Holy Angels' growth has mirrored that of the southwest part of
the city. From its charter membership of about 200 in 1961, parish
membership has grown to 1470 registered families and 3500 members.
