FROM DEACON FREDDY
MEDINA.
I need to confess something up front. I am a techno-geek; I carry a smart phone and
an IPOD everywhere and I have accounts on Face Book and Twitter.
Recently, I received a text message on my phone from
my son informing me that the Vatican declared the “Blues Brothers” movie as a
“Catholic Classic”! Excuse me?
Then, I received a “Tweet” (message on the Twitter
network) from the Vatican News Service.
On the 30th anniversary of the film’s release, “L’Osservatore
Romano,” the Vatican’s official newspaper, called the film a “Catholic classic”
and said it should be recommended viewing for Catholics everywhere.
First I couldn’t believe it has been 30 years since
the movie came out and while I was surprised that the Vatican was even aware of
the movie, I was even more surprised they considered it a “classic.”
The film is based on a skit from the TV show “Saturday
Night Live.” In the story, two brothers,
Jake and Elwood – played by John Belushi and Dan Akroyd, respectively – embark
on an unlikely road trip (“on a mission from God”) featuring concerts, car
chases and clashes with the police and neo-Nazi groups, all to raise money for
the church-run orphanage where they grew up.
While spirituality does not play a significant role in
the film, it does attempt to show that God calls many to service of
others. Just like the apostles and Paul
found out 2000 years ago, it’s all a matter of saying “yes” to God instead of
saying “no” or, worse yet, not hearing God in the first place.
What we can take from this is that we need to be open
to God and be prepared to hear His call.
Mindful that God’s call can come from the least suspected source, we can
enhance our chances – with prayer, by reading scripture, and maybe, even by
listening closely to the Sunday General Intercessions/Prayers of the
Faithful. In general, it helps to
understand the concept that God does talk to us and calls us to do things here
and now. If you do get an inkling of
something and think it might be God calling, it always helps to discuss it with
someone else and together, with prayer, you’ll be able to discern what it is
you are being asked to do.
Being open to God’s will is in itself a beautiful way
to live one’s life and brings with it a spiritual joy that is hard to beat.

YEAR OF THE FAMILY
During the Year of the Family we should pray for God’s
grace to be with all families in our Diocese.
We need to respect the privacy and dignity of others, but at the same
time we are called to reach out to those in need or who are hurting and need
healing. If you know of any Catholics
who are not coming to Church because of divorces, or other irregular marriages,
you are strongly urged to have them talk to their parish priest to begin
working on an annulment. This ministry
offered by the Tribunal of the Diocese of San Angelo can be a time of healing
and grace when approached in a prayerful manner.
