A little
seasonal update on the flora & fauna at Chez Chas & its environs: After the blistering hot summer that scorched
everything growing, managing to kill several shrubs & roses, the more
clement & seasonal temperatures of the autumn have brought forth a
celebratory flush of blooms. They look
happy, if still a bit bedraggled.
Some local attention has
been paid to the annual migration of the monarch butterflies. As of this writing I
have seen only one fluttering past, pausing to sip from some of those recent
blossoms. What has been more in evidence
has been the flight of the dragon flies. I presume they are
migrating, too, but interestingly their aerobatic choreography causes me to
wonder if they are engaging in some sort of mating ritual as they go. It’s some of the
slickest flying maneuvers I’ve seen since the barn swallows headed south.
Speaking of these recent residents, they
remained throughout the long, hot summer, producing three sets of nestlings
this year instead of their usual two.
While I don’t mind their annual occupation, it
will be nice to have the entry alcove clean again. Barn swallows are not
the tidiest of tenants.
Let us continue to pray for rain &
perform all the other rituals suspected of bringing on the rains, like having
the cars washed & going about without umbrellas.
The
annual collection to benefit our Diocesan Seminarians will be taken up at all
Masses this weekend.
